In Celebration of the First Ever World Product Day [Mind the Product]
On 23 May 2010, Martin Eriksson organised the first ProductTank meetup in the back room of a bar in London’s West End. Twenty-five interested people attended this first meetup…
Fast forward to last Wednesday, 23 May 2018, when we celebrated the first ever World Product Day. World Product Day brought together:
- A global community of over 150,000 passionate product people
- ProductTank meetups in 90 cities, covering 43 countries (you can find all the ProductTank meetups here)
- Over 20 hours of great ProductTank content, starting in Australia and finishing in the US West Coast
Our first World Product Day was all about shining a spotlight on our global tribe of product managers, connecting local communities with each other, highlighting the craft of product management, and having fun with it in the process.
The first ProductTanks of the day took place in Oceania, with Martin presenting remotely to the members of ProductTank Auckland and Wellington.

Throughout World Product Day, members of the core Mind the Product team gave remote presentations and tried to capture as many meetups and continents as they could in the process. They gave everyone a potted history of ProductTank and Mind The Product, and took questions from the audience.

We saw people spontaneously tweet their personal stories about how they’d become product managers:
After working out that I wasn’t a developer during my Web Computing degree and placement, I joined the Trinity Mirror Digital team as Digital Producer where I discovered #prodmgmt, became a BA, then a PO, and I’m now a Product Manager at @TeamOngosa #WorldProductDay

S’pose now is a good time to drop that I’m now a Product Owner #WorldProductDay
After 2 years coding and a great time at Xero, it became clear..
I spend more time in Trello than the Terminal with @juniordev_io @levelsconf
And I love it. I the user & enabling others.

It was wonderful to read so many personal stories from people talking about their path into product management. The Twittersphere was ablaze with updates from local ProductTanks and the live streaming of events.

We’ve already started thinking about ideas to make World Product Day 2019 even bigger and better, so please let us know via Slack or producttank@mindtheproduct.com if you have any suggestions for next year’s event.
Last but not least, a massive thank you to all the participating ProductTank organiser across the globe for turning the first World Product Day into such a success!
We’re also grateful to Amplitude for being the first global sponsors of World Product Day and making the day possible.
